I also agree it is probably a pheasant back, but I've also never eaten them so I can't be sure.

I didn't pay much attention to be honest. Probably dead elm or ironwood. Part of getting a good mushroom i.d. is seeing what it is growing from. Pheasant backs are known to commonly grow from dead elms for instance.

Found a bunch more pheasant backs today, and yes these were growing on a dead elm.

How have the ticks been when out exploring? No problem. I always wear my treated clothes when out in the brush. I did have one on the back of my leg a couple weeks ago, but it had apparently died from brushing up against my pant leg.
