Anybody plant any Balsam Fir on their property? I am going to break my dry spell of planting trees again and was looking at trying a 100 Balsam Fir on some buffer strips and an erosion control berm to make sure no one ever farms to close to the creek again. Any reason not to use them? I have had good luck with Norway Spruce and even Blue Spruce, should I try something new?

I planted a couple hundred Balsams here in 2014. None are over 2' tall. Deer browse the pi$$ out of them. The only evergreens I'll plant here in the future will be white and black hills spruce.

My limited experience has been similar to Stu. I’ve had to cage them or they are browsed down to the ground.

Any balsam I plant where I live is rubbed or browsed to death. 80 miles north there are lots of them and I seldom notice any damage to them.
I also think they might not do well in an exposed location, especially south of their native range.

Black Hills Spruce is my go-to on buffer plantings.

I see spruce available once in awhile in the fall...did you check Itasca Greenhouse? Planting 100 nice sized plugs will not take too long!

I have some Balasm Fir growing on my place and they are nice trees, but they are browsed and rubbed hard. I wouldn't plant them without caging them for a long time. I've had my best luck with white spruce for unprotected trees, but I do not have any experience with black hill spruce.

I literally have 1000's of balsam firs growing on my land in North Central Wisconsin. The only time deer feed on them is when they are in starvation mode. They do rub on them. When the balsam get older they have a tendency of snapping off in winds. Also they don't get as thick as spruce for blocking views. So if you are planting them for a screen, plant them closer together.

Balsam and hemlock grow prolifically here I’ve never seen them browse balsam and only a couple times have a seen them browse white pine.
