I sold my fishing boat over the phone today.....to a guy I have never met. He and I seemed to hit it off pretty well.....and he seemed to be a straight shooter. He is a farmer from west of here about 50 miles. His son does HVAC work and is working on a new home in this area.....and was all over my boat (which is displayed at my neighbor's yard on hiway 371).
Anyway.....I think we both have a clear understanding of our deal.....and I emailed him tonight to confirm the merchandise and our deal....which will happen on Thursday. He will bring a cashier's check for the sale price.....over 24,500. dollars ....so I gotta make sure this payment is good.
Been a while since I did sales like this for other than cash....and I get skeptical of the latest schemes. Question: Is a cashiers check still an accepted means of buying stuff? So many gimmicks and frauds these days....that I do not want to be bamboozled. (yeah....I'm getting old). In times gone by....I always thought a cashiers check was as good as cash money (?).
I'm a pretty good judge of character....and we have spoken three times on the phone.....and all seems legit.....but....there is always a doubt about doing biz out of town. (he's a farmer north of Wadena MN). I doubt there will be an issue.....just looking for anything I may be missing...... thanks!

My understanding is that Cashier's checks can be easily forged. Like most everything, an internet search provides plenty of info wallethub.com/edu/cashiers-check-scams/16192#:~:text=The%20payee%27s%20name%20should%20already,blank%2C%20the%20check%20is%20fake.&text=A%20genuine%20cashier%27s%20check%20always,check%20or%20is%20fake%20itself. I don't know the "best" way to avoid scams now. I'd think the new $100 bills are as close to foolproof as a guy can get, but that's just a guess.

Meeting at a bank to finalize the transaction is as foolproof as you can get now days.
A friend of mine sold a shitty old truck for 1k... A lady brought 100 dollar bills.
he went out to dinner and used one, and it was counterfeit.

I'd go with the cashiers check but call the issuing bank to be made sure they issued it.

Spent a few hours with him this afternoon. Good guy. Will cash his check tommorow. (I hope Grin) First time in 60 years that I dont own at least one fishing boat. Grin. (I do not miss it....yet.)

Boy, do I have a deal for you! I have this aluminum fishing boat that is two full years younger than me. It only leaks when you put it in the water, but you have a boat lift. I will take a cashier’s check and it is only half the price of the one you sold. Pictures will follow soon. You will stand out in the crowds on Gull Lake!

My equipment company took a bath on a cashier check. A guy bought two machines for over a 100k and paid with a cashier check. We got notice from the bank a few days later that it was a fake. They were unable to track down the guy, equipment was never seen again. It sounds like you won’t be having any issues.
