My BIL has said that antler growth ends about late July. I thought another month adds mass......but not sure about longer tines. What say you? At this point, this would appear to be my best buck at my place. I imagine he is a 3 year old? Always hoping for more.....then I remember it's northern MN. Grin.

My experience around here says most antler growth is done by early August.

I agree growth is about over. When I first ran cameras and had a big buck pic in early july, I always thought that they were going to be boomers by September. Not so.
Another thing to look for is the tips. If they are sharp and pointy, there isn’t going to be more growth. If they are bulbous, there is more to come.

I feel that the northwoods puts antler growth one year behind more southern and ag areas of the state. Our antler scorer at the fair said the same thing. There is also a strong tendency to not see long tines in the northwoods. Again a tendency but not absolute. When one looks at how late spring arrived to heavy snow areas this year, you can see how the antler growing season is shortened. If you are a trophy hunter in the northwoods, you probably need to lower your goals if you want to kill deer. Or move to another area. I still love to see some of those big old chocolate racks from the northwoods often they have heavy bases and short tines and don’t score worth a darn.

If you want to shoot high scoring bucks, buy property in an area that has been known for growing them for many years.

For you guys who have cameras out already I would look to see if the deer are in velvet well into August. This could mean some growth in August

I would guess Foggys deer from the original post is all but done.

I tend to see the the same thing as Cat mentioned once the nub gets the same size or smaller it tends to be at the end of growth. This one is from 7-26, hope he has a little more juice to squeeze.
