At some point I’ll be having a couple clearings created on a north facing slope. I’m hoping for 2 2-acre patches to be cleared. What shape clearing would be best for an orchard on a north facing slope? Square or rectangular? If rectangular, should it be facing north/south or east/west? I’m thinking 10-15 trees. Not a large orchard. The rest of the clearing would have chestnuts and food plots. I’m thinking of making the plots where the yellow marks are. Disregard the black marks. They’re names blocked out.

I would spend some time at each location before clearing land. Be there at sunrise and sunset during the growing season and see which way would give you the most light and airflow. I have some trees on a very slight north slope but nothing like yours. They get better morning sun and have taller trees to the west. You might also find some wild trees in one location or another that might indicate better soils.
