What brand/type of weed mats do you guys use around your apple trees? I don't use anything around mine yet, but after looking at my young apple trees at my cabin it is clear that I need to help them out. These trees get little care other than the white trunk spray in September. Some of my older trees are looking pretty good despite constant bear damage, but my young ones are really growing slow. I think a weed mat would be helpful there and I'd like to get a roll of something, so I thought I would see what you guys use.
On a related note, my apple trees up there seem to have much less fruit disease and insect damage than my trees back home in SE MN. I don't spray the trees at my cabin at all and the fruit looks pretty good. I'm guessing it is since there are far fewer wild apple trees in NW WI, so diseases and pests are less common than they are in SE MN.

I've used black plastic and lumite type fabric. Both work fine.

I've always used old carpet flipped upside down. Helps when my dad laid carpet for 35 years as there was always scraps around.

I ordered actual lumite from Shaw fabrics many years ago. I think I got similar stuff from Big Rock trees years ago as well. Haven’t ordered any recently. I think 5 years in sun is what is listed.

Menards has circular weed mat. Tree rings …They are $10+? But work great . I buy them for most of my apple trees.

The last few years, I have just bought tree mats and staples from the Benton County SWCD.
They are precut and I usually get 25 at a time.

I use straw around my apples. Free free and free And works great I use free wood chips, grass clippings, leaves, straw, etc. around my trees at home and it works awesome. I'm just not up at my cabin frequently enough to do that up there, so I'm hoping for a one and done type solution. Once the trees get older they should be able to compete better with weeds, but the growth rates on my young trees has been pretty pathetic up there.

Tractor supply has a heavy duty weed mat for pretty cheap. Just get the heaviest one you can find.

I use Lumite with scraps of sheetrock on top. Lots of grasses and weeds will grow on top of Lumite but nothing grows on top of sheetrock. Plus sheetrock has this thing in it that plants like. Something that rhymes with ripsum.
