I've tubed fruit trees before, makes then tremendously weak in caliper from what I seen, I had a wild apple seedling that grew to be over 6 feet its first year, i removed the tube and it flopped over on the ground. A. What did you use to stake it? B. Why did you remove the tube? Tubes need to be staked with something that flexes in the wind. That takes care of the weak trunk/poor caliper problems. Tubes are also intended to be used permanently/until they break down due to UV.

Oh heck I have no idea why I removed it, I had no idea what I was doing anyways.

pvc is what I use and what I believe the tube industry recommends using. Since I switched to pvc, I haven't had the issues with flopping over. Maybe because you have a longer growing season there it doesn't solve that problem there.
I'm not a huge tube fan, but they do serve a purpose for me.

Any chance you can get the wife involved? I've had a great time with mine pruning this year. She's helped a lot. Not this gal, its me, the lonesome apple ranger. I mean your talkin digging and caging 80 some trees if I did them all. I just don't know if I could pull that off. Could you get the mother in law to help? Spend some quality time together?
