So this was the first deer I've shot with the 6.5 Creedmoor I bought a couple years ago. He dropped in his tracks. I think I'll be retiring the trusted .243 from now on. Until my nephew wants to go then he can have it.

Unfortunately, my opener did not go as planned. I saw 11 deer opening day. Several on the neighbors land just off the property. I had a couple small ones I passed on. Saturday afternoon I switched stands and about a half hour after I climbed up I had a buck come in chasing a doe. They were a ways out and I waited until they got to the property line. I took a shot at about 120 yds and the deer I’ve been waiting for all fall fell. I brought the gun down and started to get all excited. About then he got back up and I brought the gun back up.his back was way in the air and he had his stomach tucked up (gut shot). I sent another shot his way, then he turned away and was slowly walking. He is now on the neighbors and straight away. After a time he went over the top of the hill and out of sight. Shortly after I heard 2 gunshots. I got in my truck and waited for the neighbor to come out. Turns out it is a friend of the landowner. He had 2 young sons with him. Supposedly the younger one shot this deer. I can’t help it, I MRP ran I know I should have dripped the deer, but in talking with these guys there were no smiles. If I just killed a 160 class deer I would be nuts. I didn’t search the deer and certainly didn’t bring it up with 2 young kids standing there, but I’m almost sure I killed that deer. I saw no holes in the thing. In fact I saw no blood. That animal was cleaned up. I’m sure I wouldn’t see a 7mm entry would to the gut, but I didn’t see any exit holes from where the kid would have shot it. This one is going to sting for a while. Here is the deer. At least I got to touch antlers and get a pick of it.

That sucks - did they say that they noticed it was wounded before they shot at it? That's a crappy situation though.
In our hunting group we always said whoever hit it with the first mortal wound gets to tag the deer. But from their standpoint if they believed the deer was running normally and they fired 2 shots and there were 2 holes in the deer I could see how they could think they were the only ones to hit the buck. Those type of situations sure aren't fun though.

That is a raw deal. Beautiful buck. Some times a neighbor just plays dumb and it works. I have had this happen. Real bummer!

You made a generous choice. The dad was probably expecting a big fight.

They have a 4 day doe only gun hunt happening now, and then in like a week or 2 another week or 2 long doe only hunt. If you can't tell, the DNR wants every doe killed.

Back in the day of EAB I really liked the Holiday hunt around Christmas time. I could sit in my shop with the woodstove blazing, watch bowl games, drink an occasional adult beverage, and shoot a doe on a foodplot out of the north slider window with about 2 minutes left in legal shooting time. That'd get me a buck tag for the following year's archery season. Honestly, it got to the point with EAB where that was about my only option to shoot an antlerless deer.
