They have a 4 day doe only gun hunt happening now, and then in like a week or 2 another week or 2 long doe only hunt. If you can't tell, the DNR wants every doe killed. Back in the day of EAB I really liked the Holiday hunt around Christmas time. I could sit in my shop with the woodstove blazing, watch bowl games, drink an occasional adult beverage, and shoot a doe on a foodplot out of the north slider window with about 2 minutes left in legal shooting time. That'd get me a buck tag for the following year's archery season. Honestly, it got to the point with EAB where that was about my only option to shoot an antlerless deer. The Holiday hunt used to be both bucks and does with a rifle. Way too many bucks got shot late season and then the dnr changed it to antlerless only.

Don’t you guys have anything to complain about ?? 😊 Yep the DNR should make it illegal to let corn standing during gun season. My neighbor half mile away had a 40 acre corn field still standing. All my deer must be hanging out in the corn. They shouldn't be able to hoard deer. Lol

I was in the CWD zone. Must have been around 2003-2008 or so.

I used to hunt with relatives on a Vernon county farm around 20 years ago and there were a couple years that bucks and does could be shot during the late holiday hunt.
It was a nice hunt to bag a final deer for the freezer if needed and occasionally a nice buck would get shot as well.

Well, maybe I don't remember being able to shoot a buck during the holiday hunt in a CWD/EAB zone because I never had any extra buck tags... It got to the point where I was that just shooting a doe wasn't easy. I imagine the statute of limitations has expired (hope so) now. ..at least one time I shot a doe in my folks' unit (non EAB, non CWD) and registered it as being shot in my unit so I could get a friggin' buck tag.

Not a fan of all these extra deer hunts. It interferes with my bow hunting opportunities. Hoping for a decent weekend without any hunts to go on one last late season bow. I know they want does killed but man….

Iowa has a nonresident holiday antlerless season. I’ve never tried it, but it’s supposed to be there if NR want to kill a few does?
Maybe some year , who knows. I think tags are still $75 ? Maybe a buddy weekend. Odd season I thought ?

I agree that the harvest records during that time probably weren’t too accurate. There weren’t many does in some areas back then and they didn’t need to get shot out, so we would register the same doe multiple times to get buck tags. Most of the time we wouldn’t fill the buck tags either, but at least we had one available if a decent buck walked by. It seems like everyone had a story about a big buck walking by when they still haven’t filled their doe tag.

As far as complaints about WI deer hunting/management goes....I used to be pretty active on the Lake-Link forums. The amount of bitching and complaining about WI season structures/WIDNR/EAB/CWD/etc/etc/etc back in the early to mid 2000s on that site put the bitching and whining MN guys did on various forums later on to shame.

Yeah, that earn a buck was not a popular program among most hunters I knew. But after several years guys were shooting better bucks than they had in the past, but it still wasn’t a popular rule. That was about the time that my relatives started waiting for 2.5 year old and older bucks. In the past, any legal buck was good enough. When buck tags were few, you didn’t want to use one up on a little guy only to have a big one show up. Once larger bucks were more common, it was easier to hold off for bigger bucks even after the earn a buck ended.

I remember hearing a rumor going around our area where a guy shot a doe and something like 15 people registered that same doe just so they could get a buck tag. The DNR got smart cause the following year, the registration station cut part of an ear off. Also, I heard of people registering road kill does. Back then, does were about as rare as a unicorn.

We used to hear all those stories too. We were never in EAB but guys in the hills south of us were I believe. My only complaint is the 70 fucking ag tags the neighboring farmer has. Fuck that shit all to hell. Fucking DNR.

Fuck that shit all to hell. Fucking DNR. You're located by lake Redstone correct? The Amish neighbors by us said they went out during summer and shot I believe 35 antlerless deer off a farmers field due to ag tags north of LA Valle. Said they saw over 150 deer. No clue if they saw that many but Amish know how to destroy a deer herd.

150 deer in the summer ? I’d find that hard to believe?

150 deer in the summer ? I’d find that hard to believe? we used to see that many deer frequently on summer evenings in the Spring Green and Sauk City areas. Just find an alfalfa or bean field and start counting
