Very certain deer will rub any tree I leave uncaged. But... I have several trees that have outgrown my big cages so I want to repurpose those cages. What do you guys put around bigger trees? Just a smaller cage that's barely bigger than the trunk?

What do u mean by outgrown the cage?
My cages are 16 ft long 5 ft welded wire. They will never get out grown.

I have some big cages like you have. The trees are tall enough and pruned so that they don't need a cage that big anymore. I'm no longer worried that deer will browse the branches, only worried about rubs.

How about 3 posts in a triangle and wrap some wire around them?

How about 3 posts in a triangle and wrap some wire around them? Would work... but I won't spend that kind of money. Thinking I'll cut some of my big cages into smaller cages and shift everything around. If I can turn 1 big cage into 3 little "rub" cages I'll end up with quite a few more cages overall. I'll just have to do one and see if I like it.

One of the removed cages went to a little Concordia oak and the other became an exclusion cage in a plot (that has triticale in the mix).
