A grant program is now in place to help first time farm buyers in MN. Up to $15k matching for down payment. Taking 100 applicants, approving 30-40. Wonder how a tree farm would fare in the application process.

If 30-40 are approved, I wonder how many will be making a living in 10 years from this program.

If 30-40 are approved, I wonder how many will be making a living in 10 years from this program. 0 It would be pretty difficult to start with nothing and borrow enough money to purchase land and equipment needed to farm. It would be tough to make even the payments on the land and equipment, much less have additional profit leftover that you would need to live on.

If 30-40 are approved, I wonder how many will be making a living in 10 years from this program. There is $500,000 set aside for applicants this year, $750k next year, and another $750k the year after that.

I could only see this working for a small scale vegetable farm or something similar.

The paperwork for this shit isn’t worth it. but it creates high paying government jobs! (Sarcasm intended) I alway wonder how much money of each program actually goes administration, promotion, and inspection.

I could only see this working for a small scale vegetable farm or something similar. I think that is the idea. The Farmers Market kind of farmer.
An extra $15k is really only making a difference on small acreage.
Hate to say it this way, but I'm guessing most of the reciepeints will have Asain last names. That seems to be the community of people buying small acreages outside of cities for small farms/large gardens.

My intent in my posts is not to criticize any government employees on this forum. As a fiscal conservative, I feel we need a close eye on if funds are being spent in a responsible and necessary manner. I feel some programs and organizations get too top heavy in expenses. Is that top heavy spending necessary oversight for proper spending or just waste of money? Probably some of each. Back to the original post. I see no long term benefits of this program for most of the farmers in my community. Edge of suburbia, farmers markets operations would see the most benefits, imo.

Last ten years they have been consolidating office’s to save money. Our county had to merge with the county next door. Now we have one FSA office for two counties.
