I carry an ice unit in my boat and mark locations for winter fishing. I have used the same unit for 3-4 years.
This winter it seems to vary a lot more than usual. Has anyone else noticed this? It’s been cloudy and that might be it. My buddy’s unit is also varying.
Years back, gps was made variable by the government. Then they allowed more accuracy. Could they have gone back to less accurate settings for defense reasons?

I know my old unit varied a lot depending upon satellite signal. Had a variance number depending upon signal strength. That was the old H2O unit I used for ice fishing.

My running GPS watch shows which side of the sidewalk I ran on when I look at the breadcrumb trail map. It's well over 10yrs old though.

My Garmin GPS watch is new and appears accurate within a few feet. If I am using the trail tracking system it alerts me when I am just a few feet off the trail. Distance etc. seems accurate.

This was my old boat unit. Should be the same technology. My watch doesn't get great signal in heavy clouds. It's made to average gaps in distance, time, and pace when it looses signal strength as an accommodation. That wouldn't do much good when trying to find a pin.

This was my old boat unit. You have to turn them on a wait for a bit so that it can aquire several satellites. Also make sure your screen is zoomed in, doing these 2 things will give you a much more accurate reading.

My unit had been quite accurate up until the last two- three weeks. Accuracy up to a foot or two.

On my phone I track walks and bike rides with the Samsung health app. It uses google maps and also shows me which side of the side walk I was on. My eyes aren't good enough to use a smart watch.
