Spruce, cedar, and balsam are my favorite stands. Balsam does get weak with age and I have had several stands go down.

It’s a shorter ladder stand. I don’t think so actually. If the deer walk right under me yes. The trails are all 20-30 yds to the north and I’m on the backside. Pic example .. backside of this tree . The one I’ll be in is about 5 feet taller . I think it will work.. are you laying out a challenge! 🙂 Sir, you posted last year you just planted BHS. I was being tongue 'n' cheek with you. Ok gotcha 👌 I wasn’t sure what you meant !!

I've spent a number of years already trying to strengthen my native balsam stead. Just when I think I'm getting ahead, I get some blown down because the other trees they were leaning on were all cut down by me. I discovered a half dozen of my best up and coming balsams that I released the past five years were shredded by bucks. I'm still moving the needle, it just sucks to see your most promising trees fallen down or beat up by deer. Who'd ever imagine I'd be complaining about bucks rubbing? First time I've ever done that since stewarding in the north of Cass.

Growth might be better if you clip out the double leader.

These BHS are pushing 25 feet. I might have to thin a few here soon . Has anyone done this?

These BHS are pushing 25 feet. I might have to thin a few here soon . Has anyone done this? That's a great looking wall of spruce and that could make quite a difference in winter survival for wildlife. I agree that you will need to start thinning them out though before they shade each other out and start losing branches. If I had something like that, I'd consider dropping every other tree and just leave the trees as they fall if they drop outward toward the grass. The downed trees will add a bunch of ground cover that could be used by small game.

How much would a box of 100 spruce plugs weigh? I got a few shipping notices from Chief River for under 8 pounds boxes? Is that right? I was thinking 20 pounds plus but, if they’re under 10 pounds I can take the whole lot of them in my jet sled.
