We planted sorghum and then got a 1/2 inch of rain that night ! A couple .3 type rains and a half inch last night . Looking pretty good so far. I expect the height to be 5-6 feet by the time it’s mature.

Do your deer like sorghum?

Do your deer like sorghum? I’d say not real high on their food preference. They do hit it late season . I have a ladder stand here and will mow an inside row by the stand. I have seen bucks actually bed in sorghum and this will be a travel area. This will also serve as a pheasant plot.

Nice. I just got my sorghum screens planted 8 days ago into powder. The rains last weekend should give it a good start!

I don’t think I’ll walk the sorghum for pheasants until after the rut/ gun season! It’s close to my sanctuary and I might have a pretty nice buck out there (or two)this year.
Hate to bump him.

I have sorghum in my screen mix. I planted Memorial Day weekend iirc. It was coming slowly w/ minimal rain. We got about 0.75" Saturday night. Can't wait to see what it looks like this weekend. Should start taking off.

My half way limited experience with Sorghum has been that it is easy to plant and maintain. Zero fails so far, and cost effective!

Do you spray the sorghum? What specific variety do you use? That looks like a really nice field for roosters and bedded deer.

Work it up good, then plant early June and it seems to work ! Pretty weed free ! I'm going to have to try that. I have a 1/2 acre food plot inside a 4 acre CRP field that would probably be a good spot for sorghum. I planted 1/2 corn and 1/2 beans there this year, but with the dry weather a sorghum plot would probably have done better. And I like the idea of not spraying that plot if possible.

I take that back I did have sorghum fail once! Ironically on good soil !
Small plots and rows seem to work. It does not get hammered by deer like corn and beans . I think it would be ideal by CRP. Good idea Ben !

Good idea Ben ! In my CRP program, I get to put 10% of my crp ground into plots and in this specific area I'm hoping to attract pheasants more than deer. I've never tried sorghum, but it looks like it would provide solid winter cover as well, likely better than corn.

I think sorghum is the best for pheasants! Those South Dakota boys have plenty of it—on their pheasant farms . Corn is good too, actually a mix of it side by side might be ideal for pheasants!
