For comparison, Ohio killed 213,928 in the 2023-24 season.

I thought my areas and others were due to have goal setting in January and February. I have not heard a word. Maybe they won’t goal set with down populations? Looks like last year was year four of a four year goal setting process for the state: www.dnr.state.mn.us/mammals/deer/management/population.html Thanks for posting. I should have looked. With wolf problems and low deer numbers in large parts of the state, maybe we will see some changes. I had heard rumors of change. Good or bad, who knows.

I have never seen a comprehensive article like that from Minnesota. Some of that data is available.

Hi Mark,
Indeed, we are at the midpoint of the plan and will be engaging the public in a midpoint review later this spring / summer, so be on the lookout for those opportunities! If you want to be informed of when those opportunities occur I recommend signing up for the ‘deer notes’ newsletter which will definitely include information about that (there will be a news release as well; simply scroll to the bottom of this webpage and enter your email in ‘subscribe for updates’ and select the deer notes option). This review will include a summary of our metrics and recommended changes.
For the metric of a total harvest of 200,000 you are correct we are under that goal since implementation of the plan. However, we have implemented conservative regulations as put forward by the plan, in those deer permit areas that are under population goals. Last year we reduced bag limits in 38 deer permit areas. The year prior to that we decreased bag limits in 12 deer permit areas. Most of northcentral and northeastern Minnesota are under a one-deer limit. Keep in mind hunter numbers are changing as well. In the early-mid 2000’s when deer harvest was at or above 200k, deer harvest per gun hunter ranged from 0.46 to 0.66 deer/hunter. With the slow decline in deer hunters, we were at similar harvest success in 2020 at 0.47 deer/hunter. We will likely need to see a few years of lower success rates in order to build back deer populations in northern Minnesota, unfortunately it does not happen in one year, but this mild winter will certainly help.
Thanks for your interest and comments about deer management in Minnesota,
-Barb

I seem to remember one DNR employee, probably in Barb’s position, who said when hired that he wanted to keep cwd out of Minnesota. He was a nice enough guy, but that didn’t work out. Murk….
