Has anyone tried using sunn hemp in Minnesota or Wisconsin? I need to improve the soil in a few areas, and I've read that this legume is good for adding organic matter to areas with poor soil. I'd also like to add some deer bedding cover and also some pheasant cover at the same time, and it sounds like this plant could do that, but I'm not sure how well it stands up in winter.
I'm considering sunn hemp mixed in with sorghum, maybe a little corn and whatever other seed I have lying around. I might also try some areas with straight sunn hemp, some areas with straight sorghum just to see how they perform when planted alone.
Or is there another option out there to create deer and pheasant cover using just ATV equipment? I'm hoping to borrow an atv disk and I think this ground could be worked up fairly easily since it was soybeans last year.

No help from me...I had considered using sunn hemp on my folks' old place before it was sold, but never got around to it.

I've planted it a few times as part of a diverse mix. It did grow but the deer kept it from getting very tall. I have small plots on really sandy soil so nothing ever gets very tall.

I have considered using sunn hemp in a diverse mix I am planning. Also want to plant Sorghum Sudan Grass, Milo and a few others. Hoping to develop partial screen strips to get some vertical cover in my plots.

I’m thinking of mixing sunn hemp with a 4-5 foot sorghum to create some nice pheasant and deer cover. I think a couple 1/4 acre patches of tall cover like this could be really good once the neighboring crop fields are picked.
I’m just not sure if this combo would be better than a straight milo or sorghum plot or something else all together.
This will be going in a picked soybean field, so there is little residue there now which is good since I can only get atv equipment there this year.

I bought some Sorghum Sudan Grass from Northwoods Whitetails (I think that's it) because they are said to have the most winter resistant stand available......and it will get you into December before breaking down. Lots of other SSG will break down quickly with cold weather. I have seen the stand of the NW SSG in December and it's awesome.
