I got a wild idea last night. I have been reading Neil Kinsey's agronomy book. I'm not too far into it yet, but he made an interesting comment about soils.
A pine tree can grow in extremely acid soils, but a pine tree that grows in extremely acid soils won't produce the best wood.
It got me thinking about best conditions for my road screen planting. I'm operating on near single digit magnesium, and about zero sulfur in my soil. Fertilizing with epsom salt came to mind. I'd put a hot pinch of salt sized ration down around each puny tree this weekend to give it a little boost on both. What I don't know is if that's the right amount, or if I'm risking any plant burn by getting too much down.

Are you growing trees for a screen or for quality wood?
