I was fully expecting a bullshit hit piece on deer when I found this lyme disease story. www.newscientist.com/article/mg23431195-800-lyme-disease-is-set-to-explode-and-you-cant-protect-yourself/Having read most of it, I'm quite impressed, and I even learned something. When I was up north last, I was blessed with many public broadcasting channels. One of them had a large gal on from a health association of some sort in MN. That's when I first heard somebody attribute ticks to something other than deer. She blamed mice. Now, this article also blames mice and other rodents, but it makes perfect sense when you connect the dots. Those varmint predators serve a damn important role afterall. Bring on the hawks and fox I say.

Bring on the hawks and fox I say. Skimmed it, looks like a great article. I need to read it more closely to see why they haven't developed a vaccine! This one of the reasons I've never been to big on killing coyotes, I've never seen or found evidence that they kill anything here other than mice and rabbits. I'm sure they do get the occasional fawn but we have good numbers and yotes don't seem to have an affect. I know this isn't true in every part of the country though. Another interesting read for your tick knowledge (if you didn't already know). www.caryinstitute.org/newsroom/opossums-killers-ticks

Great the DNR machine will make the direct link of oaks to acorns to to mice to ticks.....the DNR will try to cut down every oak in the state! That will fix the tick and deer problem!!!! That's about the level of "management" I tend to see here.....

I read once you can stuff cotton balls in a paper towel tube, then soak them in permethrin. Place tube in the woods. The mice find the cotton balls and use them in their nests, which then reduces the tick population.

There is a Public Health person on the Mn. Deer Planning Team. There was just a bit of discussion about high deer numbers leading to more Lyme disease. Someone should share this information with team members.
