I’m planting a new food plot area on Northern MO that is mostly cool season grass now. I need a game plan to manage it from 6 hours away before planting brassicas, so as few trips as possible. I’m going down this weekend and could get it sprayed but am wondering spraying this early will end up unleashing weeds that will end up being more of a pain than grass? Next trip would be late May or early June. Planting something like buckwheat is preferred but a bit more effort and expense. Suggestions?

If you want my advice, I would spray it with about 5 quarts per acre of Glyphosate, AMS and 20 gal per acre of water before it gets any taller. You need 4 hours before a rain. Fescue is what you will be spraying is my guess, and its tough to kill!

Long shot idea. Spray it as soon as you get there provided conditions are right. Right before you leave, broadcast 3 bushels barley per acre. If it's really thick grass, like barley would have a hard time getting to dirt, go four bushels. Or spray it and wait the month and come back and spread 2 bushels and mow it down on top. On my barley plot last year, I just broadcast rye then mowed it down after it started heading out in July. Worked out great.

Thanks guys, I'll get it sprayed on this trip. Grass is thick so if I broadcast anything it will be after it's burned down.

And I am dead serious on the 5 quarts per acre.
