I'm seeking some options from my fellow plotters. I have a 1 acre plot that is sandy loam and I just spread 1200 lbs of pel lime on it. Last fall was the first planting for this new plot and I planted WR which did good and was a huge draw as is typical for my plots. This is a northern forest area in extreme NE Wi with no ag nearby. I wanted to plant buckwheat for the summer and then WR in the fall to keep building the soil. I have honey bees and they would love the buckwheat too. Buckwheat around me is running $52-56. A steep investment for a few months of crop. I'm seeking any other suggestions on something cheaper to plant there over the summer before the WR goes in. I'm not saying that the buckwheat is out of the question just weighing my options. Thanks much

Peeps,
I'm curious why you didn't go with the combo of WR and a perennial clover last fall?
I'd go with what Mo says for now.

Peeps, I'm curious why you didn't go with the combo of WR and a perennial clover last fall? I'd go with what Mo says for now. Some spots of the plot were very sandy from the Dozer scraping off the top layer doni didn't think the clover would be the best choice. I didn't do a soul test yet but I know it is lower ph as the plot grew many ferns do I stuck with just WR.

If your looking for cheap I'd plant WR. But I do have to say i really like MO's idea. Then do your fall WR when the time is right.

If you're not looking for any special draw or nutrition for the summer, I'd do barley. Germinates pretty darn easy, doesn't need much water, has a shorter growing period that other cereals, and can be mow killed by the time you want to start your rye.
Or blend your buckwheat and barley if you can get less than a full bag of buckwheat.

This fall, try some medium red clover with the rye.
I also struggle with the idea of buckwheat at that cost. I planted it once when it was cheaper.
Mo has a good idea, or go super cheap with just bin run oats.

I think I'm going to try the peas and oats idea. Buckwheat is now out of the equation. We tried some buckwheat honey and my family hated the taste. I am aiming at planting in late May. Should I terminate the WR that is now in the plot before planting? I was thinking of leaving the WR but dragging the plot to root it up a bit and then putting my seed down.

If you let it grow until late May it could be waist high.
