When is the best time to look for wild trees? Here is what one of the trees by driveway looks like today. Next weekend will they be in full bloom or will that be too late?

It's about done down by Sioux Falls. I'm planning on waiting two more weeks for up north. This wet cold and cloudy bullshit isn't going to end until thursday.

Kabic,
I'd say those will be in bloom next weekend so I'd be looking.

When to look is very site dependent.

I find a lot during spring bloom but, I also find them by looking for their form and water spouts as I go through the woods. I also look in the fall. Their yellow leaves are usually different from the other trees I see here. The other thing I look for here is along the old stone walls. The farmers used to plant them along them. Or if I find old tall. mature maple trees together ( maple sugar grove) or barberry bush usually means there's an old homestead. Which means there's most likely apples nearby.

I find them at bloom time and take a picture that defines their location, or I mark them with a small piece of surveyors tape.
then check them in late summer for apple size drop time, and signs of disease.

Most that I've found have been at bloom time. However, a number of the last few I've found were found during the winter while hinge cutting. One big reason to know your trees by bark and winter form...so you don't cut down desireable trees

Found 4 trees, and checked on some other I knew about last week end. That tree by the driveway is the furthest along

Next few trees are on the edge of the power line right of way. This tree looks like it is getting chocked out by a vine. I will have to come back and try to free it.
