134 bass today. It was an off day. Goal is 200 a day in early season. But a fantastic day. Had a close encounter on a tom this morn. Making adjustments to get my son to whack him tomorrow morning.

Beautiful weekend. Here is a 25"er. Luckily we tried mid-day on Saturday as it was slow in morning.

I have the boat loaded and bait in the truck at 4:15 AM. It's thundering. I might just as well let my daughter sleep.

I've opened the MN Walleye season 26 out of the last 27 years on Winnibigoshish in Northern MN. One of my favorite things about Winni has been the stained water coupled with the spot tail shiner run making for a great daytime shallow water "bite". Unfortunately, I think that era is over. Zebra mussels have changed the water clarity tremendously. Every traditional spring hotspot looked like an aquarium. I could clearly see the bottom of the lake in 10 ft of water.
There is a strong year class of 17.5 to 19 inch walleyes but the lake seems like it's got bad times in the forecast. Caught zero fish under 17.5, did OK overall which was far better than most.
A few years ago, the state of MN spent $100,000's investigating an organized crime ring of Indian's netting Winni (amongst other lakes), supposedly for subsistence then selling the fish to various commercial operations. The investigation lasted many years. I don't know why but the prosecution went sideways. I'm pretty sure the buyers got slapped on the wrist & the netters walked. Anyway, the nets are back.
