What do you guys think of Vangaurd funds? I am going to start switching some money from the few stocks we have to some funds to spread things out a little. I am not invested at all in health care. Mostly dividend paying Utility stocks and blue chip companies. What do you think of this health care fund? Antone have any from Vangaurd? this one maybe, VGHCX I have abòut 50% of my 401k in health funds. I believe it is vanguard. Other than single payer there is nothing the government can do to slow them down. Health care is a huge expense for us so I figure I am getting some of my money back.

Wife has a new 401K with matching funds to invest in. We always do the maximum. But I know little about mutual funds. What of these choices she is allowed would you choice? I have picked the 4 I like sorta, how about you given the current times? she will likely work 6-8 more years. I like Fidelity Contrafund, I have had it for years, and so do many of my clients...16% the last 5 years

If I can dig up my info, I will post which they are and what the recent returns have been. I do know that last I checked, they were doing well. I also have the American Funds Small Cap World Fund, but you have to either just take the lumps on the world markets or watch it and the shit going on overseas to be able to move $$$ out if shit hits the fan. It has provided good returns for me for many years though, other than the shitstorm that took place around 2008-ish. That is what makes the long term returns look like shit with that fund. Given her "time frame", I would look past the current numbers and look strictly at the 5 and 10 year returns, and hope the current trends continue.

Other than that, if it fits your risk tolerance and desired level of involvement, go for it. See how they stack up to their benchmark index. You might be able to just buy a better performing healthcare ETF for even less, and many take the human management out. I was surprised to see that fund didn't have Pfizer in the top ten holdings.

I owned many of the best Vanguard funds for many years. IMO....those folks are among the best at running funds and keeping the costs in line. The health care fund is fantastic. Cannot go wrong with these folks if you pick good funds that meet your objectives. Same goes for most of the American funds......well run outfit....tho they charge a little more for their sales fess and management than Vanguard. Still....IF they make a little more....then they are worth it!
Both of these companies are among the best of the best!......IMO.

Even lower when you invest over $50k in a fund. We got something called “Admiral Shares”. Gives you even lower fees. But the no front load is what I like. Some of the other funds were good. But if you bought Class A shares they took 5-6% from you up front. So if you wanted no load you had to buy class B shares which converted to class A shares after 10 years. I may be dead by then! Lol!

Earnings season kicks into high gear next week. We'll find out if the market has legs going into the next quarter.

Bezos just skipped over the $1200 handle and went past $1300 in the past month. I think my last cat equipment order put the numbers over the top.

I am selling my shop next week and will have 50k to invest. Given 50k today to invest who would do what? I was considering a chunk of amazon but I have never bought individual stocks. What say you?

If you want a piece of the stock market buy a index fund with decent dividends to reinvest, rather than trying to pick one stock that could kill you later, like another Enron! But I like to buy something like land or a piece of equipment and flip it. Deals out there all over the place that can make you better than the 10% average in the market the last 5 years!

Isn't now a bad time to buy stock? I would think a big purchase now could lead to a "buy high, sell low" scenario. I'm far from an expert in these matters so help me understand if I'm wrong. I'm assuming that since we are setting records now that it stands to reason that it will drop to a closer to average point on the graph sometime soon (within a decade).

You going to tell me when a low or high is in? If you are in it for the long haul now is as good as anytime. If you buy a stock now and it goes down, you better be buying more. Or you shouldn't have bought that stock in the first place. When I bought stocks in 1979-80, when the dow was at 1,800 points. Everyone said I was nuts. Well, the nuts part has not changed, but it was a good time to buy in, and that was a high in the market I think. Is 25,000 a high in the market? Yep! So was 1800 back in 1980.

There is dollar cost averaging for those concerned about buying high. Future purchases could be higher or lower.

I was never concerned about market when I was investing monthly for retirement. I knew it would average and increase long term. I wasn't investing 50k though. I was just curious if you approached it differently with big chunks.
