Also, if everyone is just going to end up pulling their locations off that map because they don't want "guests" or non-trusted members to see it, it then becomes pointless in my eyes and I will not put it anywhere on the site to just take up resources for nothing.

Dale my opinion is that it should some how be protected. As you stated this is an open forum. There are a few members that are registered that I don't recognize. I don't know if it can be password protected to only members that have their properties on the map, that would work for me.

Thanks for the reply Tom, we have some options in that regard, so we will see what other input we get.

We could make a new group name like legacy member or something like that then have that hidden thread that they only can see. The only way they could get that tag is by a moderator giving out to them

We could make a new group name like legacy member or something like that then have that hidden thread that they only can see. The only way they could get that tag is by a moderator giving out to them I did that last night and then deleted it. That would mean the map could not be embedded though, it could only be a link like Jim's site used to be. Getting the HTML code into a post is not an easy thing to do, I have been looking at solutions for a bit now and none are good or foolproof and may end up fucking up the way the site works or require the guy posting to paste code into the post to get it to show updates each time it is used, at least that is what I have found so far. HTML is the code that the site works on, so I can paste the HTML link into the site(embed it), but BBCode is all that will work within a thread or post and that won't allow embedding the map.

Ahh gotcha, I'm really glad your here Wisc😁
An embedded map would be awesome but a hidden board with a link might be just as good, then we could put it at the top for easy access. I could never find Jim's after he posted it.
But keep plugging away, im sure the is a solution somewhere

By the way guys, I'm not trying to be a naysayer here. I want to make this work. I thought the map was a good resource and could be even better, I found it fun to see where everyone is at and their "big picture" surroundings as well, but I want to make sure we are secure and safe if we do. I will continue to look for a solution and just playing "devil's advocate" for the sake of discussion and information right now, so keep the input/questions/suggestions coming!

A bit more info, I just ran the IP's of our current "guests" one from the Metro, 2 from Duluth, one each from KY, PA, and IA. Could be on the up and up and could just be members to lazy to log in, IDK? But this is "who" you are sharing with at any given moment.

And now we have "guests" logging on with "private" IP addresses that I cannot geolocate, now we don't know where our guests are viewing the site from? ?? This ^^^ is why we need that map on a "private page" or we need to lock down the viewing of the forum to members only.

I'm not a fan of everyone being able to see where I'm at. I almost removed my location before, but decided to leave it for now.
I don't have an issue with "the regulars" being able to see things, but am against making it public
