Is the middle of July too late to plant brassicas? I've got the 15th to the 18th off and may fly up to mn and get some stuff done. One of which is planting a food plot into turnips. Is that too late to get much growth out of them for a fall hunt?

Plenty of time left if you ask me.

Nope! Right on time, if you ask me. And SD is correct, you could wait another month and still be ok with a shorter season brassica.

Sounds good. I thought I remembered Stu talking about planting in July but figured I'd ask to make sure. Not sure if I'll be able to get it done but now know if I wanted to I can.

In my neck of the woods, they have to grow for 60 days before October hits. Frost doesn't matter. The crush is on beginning end of September/early October whether it's 20 degrees or still 80.

I try to plant around July 4th. Two years ago I had to plant later and we hit a hot stretch without rain and we had a very poor crop on the later planted brassicas.

Wade- this reference is in regards to Cass County which is east of you and not where I live.
My cousin had a small corn foodplot adjacent to my property and on July 4 I broadcasted some turnips into it. WE got three inches of a downpour as I drove home that day. The corn froze in August and the turnips were the hottest food source., It was just too bad I had not scattered more seed.
This was light soil and no fertilizer was added.

The last 2-3 years a guy could have planted radishes in late August/early September and still got some tubers. Mid-late July is about perfect timing for purple tops, as long as we get some rain.

I normally plant my mix of DER, PTT, and GHR after the 4th. Sometimes it's been later in the month of July......and it's all rain dependent in July. Normally we get enough rainfalls to pull the brassica thru.....but July can be a tough month for these sandy soils...... if no rains.

I've got a heavier clay soil where these will be going that'll hold moisture for a while so it should be good. I'm still looking for a cheap flight to Fargo and am not having any luck so I may not make it.

Seems to me you can get a ticket for $150.
