Forester says good market for Bur Oak logs right now...used for whiskey barrels.
Just thought I'd pass that on to anyone looking to harvest ?

We plan on a select cut--oak this winter on farm we have in Pope County...may take some ash along with it.

If you have ash and someone who will pay for it...I'd cut it all. It won't be long before it's all dead

Not sure what for. I have hundreds of straight tall ash trees and would like to maybe have some cut for boards. The wood itself is great for like a knotty pine interior (except it's knotty ash).

Whats great, is our CRP plan from about 10 years ago had a significant percentage of ash in it. Now they are 3 to 5 ft tall and all gonna croak in the not too distant future more than likely.

Kurt Do the trees need to be straight and clean of knots for use in barrels?
Loggers we have had out to our place have all said the same thing. Our oaks are good for firewood and nothing else because they are so full of knots, and many dont have enough straight to get enough board length out of htem.

I really do not know, but I could get the information from the forester. He lives in Alexandria. I'll call him today. I guess the small brewery/distillery market is creating demand.

Forester is looking at my 40 on Friday, 26 acres of the 40 are almost solid bur oak, with a few hackberry, ash and Cottonwood mixed in...along with a ton of buckthorn...
Some are ready for harvest, a select cut should be perfect to open up canopy.

So how much is paid for oak right now?
Is that at the Parkers Prairie land?
I really want to do a few small acreage clear cuts. I looked for a logger a few years ago, and nobody was willing to come in to do it for so little harvest and no other work in the general area available.

I hinge, then spray roundup, prob, not best plan, but all I have time for, and it does kill most of it.

I do not know the figures as of yet. When I find out, I'll let you know.
