What's the go-to to spray fruit trees and rose bushes? The roses are bloomed out, so not sure if that changes anything or not? Noticed a few beetles down on the rose bushes the other day.

Sorry Ace, I'm not a fruit tree sprayer. If my younger grafted trees in my nursery at home get hit with aphids or. Japanese beetles I hit them with sevin. I will spray early in a cool morning or late day after sunset to prevent spray hitting working bees. For your location you may need to develop a spray schedule. I'd read this Stark Bros link and get their sprays. That should cover most of what you need. I'd also plant only fire blight resistant trees because you're in an area where it can devastate trees when it hits. www.starkbros.com/growing-guide/how-to-grow/fruit-trees/apple-trees/spraying

Ace,
There are two key functions spraying provides; 1) fighting insects 2) fight fungus. I am a novice, so most of this is info from deer habitat guys.
The Fungicides that get mentioned most frequently are Captan, Rally, & Soveran. I spray Rally once or twice after the apple blossoms fall off to keep CAR in check. I also spray Captan once or twice during the summer to keep Scab at bay. Soveran is supposedly badass but it's expensive and your only allowed to use it two or three times per year.
The Insecticides that get mentioned most often are Sevin and Imidan. Sevin is great but it thins fruit crops if used during early summer. Imidan is great but I think it recently became a "restricted" chemical. I still have a bunch so I haven't done the research needed to find a replacement.
Bonide is garbage....

Sevin does a pretty good job on Jap beetles. Add spreader/sticker so you don't have to re-apply as soon.

Sevin does a pretty good job on Jap beetles. Add spreader/sticker so you don't have to re-apply as soon. Can you apply after they have bloomed? Roses, fruit trees or both? Sevin can be applied to both anytime (there is a time restriction on applying before harvest, don't know it offhand)...but it can cause fruitlets to drop (it's used as a thinning agent by some orchardists). I would think in your location the fruitlets are far enough along that they wouldn't be impacted by the spray...but I can't guarantee that.

Ok thanks. And yes was asking mainly for the roses Do read and follow label instructions for roses/ornamentals. I have burned fruit trees in the past going with too strong of a dose of Sevin (more isn't always better )

smsmith I am going to spray a mix of captan/imidan here this week, but I have quick question. Last year I mixed some liquid of sevin in it as well. However I don't have any liquid but I have tons of powder Sevin, will that work/dissolve or don't bother. Second question, it's gonna rain Friday morning, is it a waste of time to spray tonight or Thursday? Third & final, I hand thinned my gala and bagged the fruit I wanted kept. I prolly shouldn't hit that with any sort of Sevin should I?

I would not spray tonight or tomorrow if it's going to rain Friday...at least not if decent - heavy rains are forecast In your location I wouldn't spray Sevin on fruit trees yet...unless you want them thinned.

I think you'll be ok. Don't spray when it's really hot or you'll burn/stress the leaves.
