I see you viking gents are now going to be allowed to have a scope on your muzzle loaders this season. Do you guys like this or not? We've always had them so I guess here in MI its a way of life.

Probably not needed in my opinion. Muzzy should be a primitive weapon so scopes should be left off.

Personally I like it for one reason. I dont shoot well with open sights. i would love to have a zero power scope just for crosshairs.
But with that said, I dont like it, because it will surely lead to more harvest. Our DNR is just getting more and more ways to angle at taking more deer.

The saving grace is that in northern MN it's getting pretty cold by muzzy season. Lord knows it might save some deer in my area. One neighbor on the other property loves to fling lead no matter how low the probability of a clean kill is. That is also with a scope on a rifle though. Good rule of thumb is, if the DNR is for it, it'l likely bad for deer.

I am not a fan either, but then again, if it were up to me, I'd cut back the length of each season by 25%

I like my old pour powder. Cool way to hunt. My Prohunter with a scope...just another rifle in the woods. No judgement on any hunter but the inline with scope is anything but primitive

It's an alarming trend. Not only with deer, but with turkey as well. Continue to increase opportunity by longer seasons and introducing more effective weapons until the resource is depleted. The spin machine has been doing the same thing in the headlines for turkey harvest the past 5 years that we've been seeing from deer for a decade +.

My goto gauranteed turkey spots from 10 years ago have been very stagnant now for a handful of years.
I cant place blame directly on extended opportunities, but it sure has gone south for whatever reason. Many factors I am sure, but every spring I open up the hunting guidelines, and new extended opportunities pop up. Zones are so large now, they have zero way of knowing where harvest trends are changing. I would like to go back to the deer permit area designations so they can at least see some trend in a smaller area and be able to adjust harvest quota if needed.
My son archery hunted from opener until Memorial weekend, and saw one Tom total. No jakes. It happens. Some years are better than others. But the trending we are seeing is less birds.
Bottom line, I dont have much good to say about the Wildlife department of our esteemed DNR.
