I have run into an issue at work I am trying to solve. We have propane bulk plants all across our trade territory. These things have big setbacks for safety reasons, as well as large yards to get semis in to unload product. The problem I have, is that my guys are spending 1-2 days per week mowing and trimming at these bulk plants to keep the grass and weeds at bay.
I need these guys doing other things, and I am sick over the amount of money we blow on maintenance. I have proposed planting these properties into wild flowers for the following reasons:
1. It would save a butt load of labor 2. It would save us a butt load of money 3. Positive PR from the pollinator advocacy 4. It would get people talking about us 5. We can get the rest of our work done faster
I'm working through the logistics now with Milborn Seed outta Brookings, and trying to figure out if we can hire the SWCD to do the planting. I've got it pinned down to about $400-500/ac to get it prepped and planted. It could save us thousands per year in maintenance. I'd really love to see this become reality and have a big flashy sign out front promoting it.
The seed guy is saying we should get it killed and put in a temporary cover until late fall and then drill the flowers in around November 1st for this area.

Sounds like a great idea. We did something similar at my work place and saved significant money on not having to run mowers, irrigation, etc. we actually partnered with the state, pollinator societies, etc to get the cost share of planting and maintenance. We got a lot of positive press for it as well. Not sure if these other suggestions would apply, but we turned a portion of it over to be used as a public garden to support families in need another section that was out of view was used as a compost pile from the cafeteria and we we were able to sell the compost to employees each spring. Much better than mowing a huge lawn throughout the year. Good Luck

Sounds like a good idea. You know we'll need pic if you get it going.

Great idea! I was at the Wichita airport yesterday and they had a bunch of wild flowers in their medians. Looked rally good! Of course it was another opportunity to annoy the wife... "Look! That's what I want to do".

Right now the big challenge is figuring out how much time and money we really spend on the current system. You'd think we know, but we don't. I've been in my new role for five weeks and I'm learning there are all kinds of mysteries that need to be solved.
