Stu's advice to not let those thistles go is living rent free in my head right now. The thistles are bad in my rye plot, but they haven't flowered yet. I don't have a thistle spray with me. I don't have a mower here. The rye is already headed out. The best idea I can come up with, with the tools I have this weekend, is this:
I am thinking about thickly overseeding barley (5 bushel rate) into this rye and pressing it flat with the skid steer bucket, in hopes that I can break the stems of the thistles too, or at least a majority of them. I think i can still come back and put in brassicas in August even with the barley. It should be headed out and ready to press or mow kill again.
What do you think?

I've got a small spot where I planted evergreens and the thistles are thick. I'm thinking along the lines of Riggs' suggestion...scythe.

Stu Clopyralid 3 will take care of those thistles and not harm the pines. Good to know. Any idea how much it costs? I wouldn't need much.

I have a quart...... Its 1 oz per gallon. I want to say it was $90. I used 2 ounces of it last summer.
Wnklman is taking half of what I have left. I will never use it all up.

Thanks. For the small area I've got I'll probably just stick to hand control. Sounds like cutting them after they've bolted and before flowering (e.g.= now) you should get good control (on all thistles except Canadian anyway)

How much do you need? Maybe I can get some to you somehow. Thanks very much for the offer, but it would probably require more time to get the stuff than it would to scythe them down. I'll get 'er done

^^^I don't think SD has a sprayer or spray with him.
If he wanted to run to town, pick up a 2 gallon sprayer and some broadleaf killer (I'd go with a brush killer instead of straight 2,4-d)...then that'd be the way to go IMO

Barley belongs on a beer forum. This is a deer forum. How the hell did SD become a global moderator on the wrong forum? Is the DNR running this forum since the founder decided to go on a walkabout without flying to Australia?

A trip to town may be in order. The slight chance of rain has turned into a downpour with pea sized hail as we speak. The demolition project is on ice until another weekend.
