Some new trees doing well, some old ones not! Its the cycle of life for trees I guess. All in all, not being a tree guy, I am happy!

Oak wilt starts at the top of the tree and works its way down. Its not oak wilt.

Oak wilt starts at the top of the tree and works its way down. Its not oak wilt. These trees started getting thin 2 years ago. Thin at the top, middle and bottom. I don't know what it is then, if it aint oak wilt.

John- I know nothing about chestnuts, but I suspect you will need some 10 foot conduit for support when you take the tubes off of those trees.

Nice Mo.
I always look forward to your updates on the chestnuts. They look like they'll put on some growth this year and be ready to produce some nuts next year.
Not sure on the oaks. Do you have tent caterpillars or cicada damage?

That plot is going to be nice, mixing the corn and soybeans is the way to go imo.

Mo,
Those caterpillar things are called catkins. They produce the pollen that pollinates the little round burs that holds the nuts. As your trees mature they will have both burs and catkins. They'll cross pollinate with other nearby trees. Usually via the wind. If your lucky the burs were pollinated and will have full nuts inside them come October. If not there will by little flat empty hulls inside the spiny burs. The burs will still grow to about the size of a tennis ball even if unpollinated. Next year your trees should be loaded.

Mo,
If you're still down there you could try hand pollinating those burs. Cut off one of those caterpillar things (catkins) and rub it over the burs on other trees. I'm not sure on timing but, seems like now is the time.
