I tried it on two small food plots this year. The larger one was about 1/4 acre in mostly soybeans with a little buckwheat and turnips in one area. The other was only a couple hundred square feet in size and was mostly buckwheat with a tiny area of turnips. Two weeks after putting it down I checked it. The larger plot looked like it only had minimal browsing pressure but I think I planted the beans too deep since only about 5% came up. In the small plot I had good germination on the buckwheat but almost all of it has been eaten off. Hard to tell if it works or not. Its possible I didn't spread it thick enough on the small plot. I spread it at 250lbs/acre on the larger plot and just guessed on the smaller plot. I have low deer numbers in my area but I think they are a bit hungry. I'm in a wooded area with the nearest farm field about a mile away and it is planted into corn.

All of this rain isn't helping things with Milorgranite. Washes away the smell and it doesn't work that well after a rain!

I just re-applied my little plot. The deer have been browsing the past week or so out there for sure according to my browse cages. Hopefully this application lasts a bit longer than the last!

I applied 5 bags via that Herd Spreader pictured in one of the above posts. Really worked slick and took no time or effort to apply. Likely the best money I have spent to keep the deer off my beans until they marured a bit. Now my beans are nearing canopy stage.....and I doubt the deer could get ahead of the growth. I'm going to oversee some brassica into these beans after the big heat cycle passes by in a week or so. Looks like the coming hot weather could be rough on new plantings (?).

Yep, I'm thinking my plots may be worthless this year. Success with mid-summer planting is pretty "iffy" for me. It all depends on timely rainfall. Sometimes I get ahead of a good rain.....and get great germination....and then nothing. Everything just burns up in this sand without weekly rainfall. I typically get good rain thru mid July.....and then there is a month of hot with little moisture. Lots of uncertainty about when to start fall crops for me. I've done well in some years with early (July 4th) planting.....and I've done well with early August. Also been burned out a time or three. I have done well with a late May or early June on soybeans......and that seems to be my most successful way of getting a good quantity of deer to frequent my land or hang out here. I think I will always plant soybeans. Low cost and easy to care for.....now that I found the Milogranite trick.

Picked up a couple more bags of milorganite at Menard's in Alex today. It's worked so far to keep deer out of our garden, but I want to reapply to make darn sure they continue to avoid the area.

Drove into my food plot about 10:30 this morning. Had a mature doe feeding in my beans. Took a while for her to run off. The beans are looking pretty good.....and I don't think I will add any more milorganite at this point. Next time rain is in the mix.....I will likely overused with a brassica mix.

Oh my. Well blank slate for overseeding. hell, plow it. If you are gonna replant something, might as well have a seed bed instead of hoping for a pounding rain.
