I'm not a fix it kinda guy. I've got a weed whacker that was running fine last fall when I put some Stabil in and ran it before putting it away. Now...it starts and runs but when I try to get it running at high rpms it kind of dogs out. I replaced the spark plug (old one still looked good), dumped the gas and replaced with fresh, put some carb cleaner through it, and tried running it without an air filter (ran the same). That's about the extent of my abilities.
Time for a carb kit, or is there something else I should try?

You've done everything I know to do, and the carb kit would be my next move too. Probably just something gummed up in there.

Try pulling out the carb adjustment screws and spray some cleaner in the jets. Just remember how far the needles were screwed out. Do this by tightening the adjustment screws and making note how many turns it was.

Can you pull apart the fuel line or check the fuel filter for blockage?

I have a method you might try, because I use it myself.
I just start taking things apart until I begin to get uncomfortable with the number of parts I have laying around.

Yeah don't do that. I have a John Deere rear tine tiller sitting in the garage with a broken spring and linkages attached in the wrong holes!

If you do not use non ethenol fuel, expect to pay $100 for repair. I add 6 oz of sea foam to 5 gallons of fuel, never had a problem since.

May need a mixture adjustment or carb may need to come apart. Diaphragms stretch and don't pump like they are supposed to. If you can see the brand of carb and the carb model number get a carb kit and I will put it in.

I use 87 octane in everything. Never had much for an issue. I do add Chemtool to the gas can. The cheap seafoam at walmart.

Sorry to be a mechanical idiot but What does seafoam do for you when you add it to gas?

You can hear the ocean when you put your ear to it.
