2,4-d doesn't do shit on Canadian thistle IME. I don't even waste my time with straight 2,4-d on lawn weeds. I use 1/2 oz. Milestone per gallon of water. One thing I'll say is DO NOT USE Milestone in close proximity to desirable broadleafs (including woody species, e.g. apple, lilac, etc.) Have you realized some good results from last years application of this stuff?

Yep, thistles hit with Milestone are toast. Thistle fighting is a year long, annual battle

I sprayed 24d Amine on thistles yesterday around our barn, and today they were mush already.
I honestly dont know what kind of thistles they are. Several years ago, we had a guy from the U of M Ag Extention office come out to our thistle farm at that time, and he said we were over run with plumeless........ I have no clue if we still have that, or the other varities.

Foggy Had you tried this stuff or something similar before going to Milestone? www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/gordons-amine-400-2-4-d-weed-killer-1-qtI will get some pics of my thistle next time I am up. After I looked at some pics last night on the web, I am wondering if a bunch of what I have is now Canadian. Does Canadian get significantly bigger than other kinds? I had some where the stalks were massive compared to anything I recall in the past. Probably pushing 1 inch in diameter. Thats the stuff I sprayed on Friday, and was in meltdown mode already 24 hours later.

Canada thistle is smaller in height, flower size, and leaf size than other thistles. IME, 2,4-d will burn them down but then they come back from the roots.

Ok. Now I am very curious what type(s) I have now days.
I would agree with what you guys have said that its a bit crazy this year.
Next weekend I am loading up the ATV sprayer and going to town. I dont have any major infestations, but a lot of stuff scattered all over.
Plus I noticed I have some around pines, so the hand sprayer with clopyralid will be in my holster too.

From your description, I'd guess the large specimens you're describing are bull thistle.

I never thought of them coming back from the roots. I have used 2,4-D and it seemed to work. I am going to have to pay better attention. another herbicide that works is Stinger but last time I priced it it was expensive.

I've had thistles (all kinds) come back from the roots after hitting them with a stiff dose of glyphosate as well. I have not had that happen when using Milestone.
I should have taken some pics last week. I had thistles that had been burned down after I hit them with 4 oz./gly/gallon with new green growth in the center of the burnt down plant. I hit them again with the same dose of gly and expect that I'll get a total kill the second time. I'm using gly there because I'm spot spraying in a clover plot and don't want the residual impact that Milestone has.

I have a book called "Weeds of the Great Plains". It says: Underground: Rhizomes, fleshy, extensive, creeping. Canada thistle is and aggressive weed and is classified as noxious throughout..............yadda yada. .....thus large patches may not produce any seed. HOWEVER, the patches may continue to become larger because of the creeping root system.
^ This has become my experience with this weed. ......and I got lots of other thistle too. (I think they are Bull Thistle)
Evidently the bull thistle will not withstand cultivation.....but the canadian thistles will.
