Damn that is interesting. I'm sure it's nothing short of an act of God but have you found the reg that describes the process to remove the refugee designation? Could you "manage" the land, not hunt it, to control the vermin like the whitetail deer? I am certain if I phoned the OZ (the commissioner) he would be more than happy to satisfy any requests. We golf and swap women often.

If I were rich... I would buy places like this and put up "no trespassing, leased for hunting" signs all around it. Then I would bring my buddies over and shoot guns every single day. I would also hang dead fish heads and coyote heads on all the perimeter fence posts.

But if they weren't that's the first thing I would do... fence the crazies out.

Found a property I liked and dug a little. No hunting. There is a petition process that lets citizens organize and shut down sections to hunting. If 50 people sign in a county and somebody has a nickel or an uncle you could be done hunting your land? Subd. 8.Modification or abandonment. A state game refuge may be vacated or modified by the commissioner under the same procedures required for establishment of the refuge, except that a refuge established or modified under subdivision 2 or 3 may be vacated or modified following a public hearing as specified in subdivision 4a. Subd. 9.Vacating refuges open to hunting. Notwithstanding subdivision 8, the commissioner may vacate a state game refuge by publishing a notice in the State Register if the refuge has been open to trapping and hunting small game including waterfowl, deer or bear by archery, and deer or bear by firearms for at least five years. www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes?id=97A.085

Bengtson, Fred (DNR) Attachments9:45 AM (9 hours ago)
to me Brooks, Lura Lake State Game Refuge is one our few statutory state game refuges that remains closed to all hunting and trapping. It was established as a state game refuge in 1951 by petition of all landowners. A fair number of our state game refuges have been opened up to some hunting and trapping (MN Hunting and Trapping Synopsis) or abandoned entirely. Lura Lake serves as a fairly important waterfowl refuge that we would like to retain. If all the landowners petitioned us to open the refuge up to deer hunting or other ( but not waterfowl) we would likely consider it. For now the entire area outlined in platt map above is closed to hunting and trapping. There is no public land (Laura Lake is a public water and can be fished with landowner access permission, although there may only be bullheads and sunfish in it) within the Laura Lake State Game Refuge. Establishment of state game refuges mostly occurred in the 1920’s – 1950’s when many game species were at an all-time low. Back then it was considered a reasonable conservation practice. Landowners also used refuges as a way to eliminate trespass. Hope this helps. By the way, there is some discrepancy in the name of the refuge. The actual legal documents establishing the refuge state that it is Lura Lake State Game Refuge. Misnaming in platt maps and county maps happens. Fred

Fred would love nothing more than to get deer killed in there.

Look up Schoolcraft game refuge, it's 36 square miles of public and private land. Only open to bow hunting and it used to be a premiere spot to hunt until they upped the tags and wolves moved in. My understanding is the whole township agreed to it a long time ago. I used to have a lease there and had some incredible hunting. I don't know many refuges that have zero forms of hunting allowed, the DNR wouldn't be happy with all those deer running around.

I have not heard much about Schoolcraft the last few years, but I had clients who used to hunt it.
I drive by the refuge that Brooks mentions every week. I never knew the name of it.

The Minnesota River Valley used to be archery only deer. No turkeys or waterfowl. Now you can bow hunt turkey. I know there is 1 refuge by brainerd private lands that is archery only.
