I have access to as much Filamentous Algae as I could possibly want. Any of you guys that goof with ponds use it as mulch around your trees? It's high in nitrogen, smothers the ground, and holds moisture under it. I think it could be a good alternative to other mulches.
What about in a compost? It could be a very easy source of organic matter to put on plots...
Anyone using this stuff, or just cussing it in your ponds?

Could you get air through it though as a mulch? Rule #1 in mulching is that it has to breath, or you start growing mold. What state is it in when it gets to ya? Is it goop, dried, or something in between?

Is it goop, dried, or something in between? It's in the "growing in the pond as we speak" stage. I'm not sure about its breathability. I think while it's wet it wouldn't breath much at all, but I think it dries out pretty quick. I may have to drag some out and experiment with it. Maybe leave a mat of it by the pond just see what it turns into after a week or two.

My neighbor uses my weeds and algea that i rack out of my ponds. Drys in piles all summer then he incorporates in his soil in the fall. He swears by it but i have no science behind it.
Filimious algea will stay wet for a long time here in Mn. Not sure i would use it as a mulch

Thanks for the help guys. I will keep it from my fruit trees for at least a while and maybe try to compost it. I bet you could make some awesome pumpkin mounds with it after a yr of working into soil, straw, and leaves.
