That looks like the bugger there SD. Grows fast, and spreads prolifically.

I've got it growing behind my brother's place on my mini habitat area. It hasn't gotten much of a hold there, but it's also a pretty hard place to grow.

Red elderberry isn't edible for humans, I didn't think it would survive this far north but apparently I was wrong

This is at my home place in Wyoming, MN. I cut it back every few years, but it seems to come back with a vengeance.

Wouldn't that light tan scaly bark tell a guy if it's honeysuckle vs red berried elder?

Wouldn't that light tan scaly bark tell a guy if it's honeysuckle vs red berried elder? Several things will point to jap bush-honey suckle: White or yellow honeysuckle flowers in the spring and summer Red berries in late summer or early fall Early to green up in spring and last to drop leaves in fall Hollow primary stems. Leave edges are smooth not serrated I have a shit-ton, yes that is a technical term for somewhere between way too much and holy shit that's a lot) of it at and near my place. What is pictured is NOT jap bush-honeysuckle.

^^^ bush honeysuckle can also have pink to red flowers. Buckthorn holds leaves longer than B.H., but they'll both have leaves longer than anything native.

^^^ bush honeysuckle can also have pink to red flowers. Buckthorn holds leaves longer than B.H., but they'll both have leaves longer than anything native. I personally have only seen the white or yellow flowers......not saying they can't be another color - but I have not seen that. To my knowledge I don;t have buckthorn (and NO I don't want/need any) so I can speak to that stuff. I hunt JBH almost year round....in the early spring it's the first shrub on my place to green up.....so if it's green it gets a good hard look. Then as time passes I look for the flowers - that color jumps out and is real noticeable on the edges of cover where it gets more exposure to the sun. Then later yet I look for the red berries, and then again late in the year it tends to be the last shrub to hold it's leaves as well. If I have any doubt I cut a larger stem and if it's hollow.....it gets whacked and stump treated.
