I think that was one of my failures from last year.
Is that site now closed for ordering for next spring?

I think that was one of my failures from last year. Is that site now closed for ordering for next spring? Art, they will ship bud wood for T-grafting up until July 15. After that they take orders for scion wood for next March.

I think that was one of my failures from last year. Is that site now closed for ordering for next spring? I keep waiting to hear that GRIN won't be offering scions to regular folks, but so far it hasn't happened. I'm going to focus on crabs next year I think. Shafer, Trail, Trailman, Richland, and Linda for now. I'm also going to request some Siberian pear scions and graft them into my Ure and Early Gold pear trees in hopes of improving future pollination.

I need to check my topworks from last year, but I thunk I had failures for shafer, trail, and Linda Sweet. I will have a bit of Trailman for next year if you need it. What can you tell me about Richland? I have tried shafter and Trail for two years. I do need to check my Northland crab to make sure the new growth was above the graft union.

Not much, only what I read here npgsweb.ars-grin.gov/gringlobal/accessiondetail.aspx?1019514My Northland has been a slow grower so far. It's maybe 5.5' tall now, I grafted it in '15 on dolgo rootstock. Those dolgos are kinda weird. I've got some monster trees from that year and some midgets. I imagine the variation is due to both variety and rootstock...what's really weird is I have two dolgo rootstocks growing maybe 50' apart. Both had failed grafts that year...one is approaching 7' and the other is barely to my knee. This crab looks interesting as well npgsweb.ars-grin.gov/gringlobal/accessiondetail.aspx?1018579

That looks like another good one Stu. Ya, I keep finding stuff I want to try. Other than replacing dead or worthless trees, I'm out of room though. I'm thinking about doing a bunch of Frankentrees in the future.

That's what I'd do Stu. If you planted rootstock you be able to start grafting in over in 2-3 years. A limb here. A limb there. I've got 2 year old B118 that's 8' now that I'm thinking of doing that to. I've got plenty of budwood.
I really think for a new property or new to apples. That's the way to go. Plant rootstock and graft when you have time or find a variety yiu want to graft. Cheapest way to go too.

^^^I plan to use wild crabs that are already growing here for future rootstocks. The price is right

Hundreds of people bringing scions. Some day I'll get up there to check it out. 200 varieties. This was this years info. www.mofga.org/Events/SeedSwapScionExchange/tabid/301/Default.aspx
