Without any thing to compare it too, I would think it is in the 350 to 400 pound range. Maybe heavier. Big boar!

Here in Wisconsin when a bear marks a tree it is usually about a 3 inch diameter sapling that he will bite off or pull down, or a really big pine tree that they will make a bite mark as high as they can reach. The teeth and claw marks are very visible. Never saw any thing like what you have in your pics where they pull and strip the bark.

Tom I believe this is definitely the bear doing the damage. He has teeth and claw marks in those trees. I've seen lots of moose damage to younger maple in the past and know what they look like. There are pointed claw marks in the hemlock photo down low and high. The moose I've seen will gouge out flatter wider grooves with their incisors. I've never seen moose bite an older hemlock or an oak with thicker bark. They do like younger bark though. In this photo it may be hard to see the claw marks but they're there.

I sent some photos off to our state biologist to see what they think. Here's a photo of the claw marks at the top of the wound.

The state biologist got back to me. He confirmed it was a bear. They had a similar issue two weeks ago where they went onsite to check out the complaint. I hope the boar is done marking for now and moves on.

A lady who works for my nephew lives about 2 miles from my land. Her chicken coop was raided and all but, one chicken killed. Two days later the bear broke a window and tore the screens from their house. The game warden gave them the ok to shoot on site.

Holy crap those critters are destructive. I'm glad we don't have them here. The bear out east must have a total different disposition than the ones in Wisconsin. The most you hear of problems in Wisconsin is bear raiding and destroying bird feeders.

The most you hear of problems in Wisconsin is bear raiding and destroying bird feeders. I'm not sure Tom. We have the bird feeder issues here as well. When we first bought our property I had a bear that ripped down my plastic posted sign and left his jaw mark in it. I put it back up. He tore it down. This happened 4 times. I finally moved it to another tree 10' away and it's been fine since. I had one black cherry marked and chewed by them back in 2012. They chew it every now and then but, didn't destroy the tree. It's in the middle of the photo. I usually don't worry to much about running into them when I'm out but, this ones got me looking over my shoulder more often. We also had them on our deck a few years ago when they tipped over our grill and stole the aluminum drip pan. They damaged the manifold so that cost $100. upload high quality photos
