I've never thought about thinning apples before but, I noticed this wild tree is overloaded this year. The branches are drooping already. I think I'm going to spend some time next weekend and snip several apples from it.

I did that about 2-3 weeks ago with one in my orchard too. It has been in rebuilding stage (old tree) and finally has new wood growing everywhere. Poor little wood would never have been able to hold the crop that was hanging on there!

The good thing about the limbs drooping is that it'll produce more fruit spurs on those limbs for future apples.

I should be thinning, but I hate to do it after no apples last year.

Art,
If they are bending the branches down a little it is actually good because it stimulates the hormones in the branches to grow more fruit spurs. If they get real droopy then it can break limbs though. Be thankful you don't have bear.

I have limbs propped up on one tree all ready.
