A coworker is giving me a lot of peaches today. Possibly several 5 gallon buckets. He said his trees are loaded and a lot will be left to rot if he doesn't give them away.
What can I do with them? Many will be eaten fresh but many need to be preserved. Canning? Freezing? Dehydrate? I've never had this many fresh and local peaches so I'm not sure what it best.

My mom used to buy flats of Colorado (never Michigan, had to be CO) peaches. We'd eat them raw, but most got canned. Nothing like a home canned peach in heavy syrup

I ended up with more peaches than I know what to do with. Plus a bunch of blackberries.
Berries went into a cobbler last night and the rest were frozen with some left out for kids to munch.
Peaches filled one of my dehydrators. A bunch were given to some neighbors and we still have a lot left. Serious canning session to follow.

Did you sprinkle a bit of sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves on them?

Wife did it. Brown sugar. A little lemon juice. Not sure what else.
I just threw them on the fire. Ate some with dinner. Warmed a few left overs up and ate with vanilla ice cream tonight.

I ate some jersey peaches today. There was no way of eating them without it dribbling juice all over may face. Used 3-4 napkins per peach. Are jersey peaches a variety or from New Jersey?

Peach cobbler my wife made is in the oven now. I've never canned anything before my walnuts. The peaches have started me into the process a little deeper. Maybe someday I'll be at the level of SD. This website has been a great help. I like the fact that several things are written as small batch recipes. foodinjars.com/recipe-index/

I might steep some with rum or vodka. Makes a nice fresh liqueur

Do peaches grow like apples? Do you need to graft in order to get the type you want? Or can I grow them from the pits I harvest and expect a similar tree to be produced?
I ended up with two kinds of peaches. The larger are definitely better for cutting and canning. The smaller might be a better wildlife peach. The small taste fine but they are a lot of work for little reward.

I have very little direct experience with peaches..grew a couple trees on my old place and they died of canker before they bore fruit. You can certainly grow peach trees from the pits, and I believe your odds of getting a decent peach are better than the odds with apples and pears....and it won't take as long for a peach to produce as an apple or pear.

FRUIT SMOOTHIES ARE FANTASTIC! Freeze the fruit and make smoothies. I have one every day for lunch. We freeze bananas, strawberries, watermelon, blueberries, and so much more. FANTASTIC and refreshing drink....and good for you! Easy way to use up any fruit or veggies. (although I hate veggie smoothies)

Stu,
The orchard near my land have some sort of peaches that survive up there. They weren't very good looking when I saw them on the trees but, maybe that was end of season? It was mid August a few years ago.

Stu, The orchard near my land have some sort of peaches that survive up there. They weren't very good looking when I saw them on the trees but, maybe that was end of season? It was mid August a few years ago. Some peaches survive winters in Fargo, ND too. They can take some serious cold, but they oftentimes won't fruit due to their fruit buds freezing off. The guy in Fargo I bought Trader Mulberries from was growing/trialing a peach variety when I met him. He grew the original one from a seed as part of a trial, then started selectively breeding it as it survived winters when others did not. At that time (9/15) he was hoping that his peach would result in a variety that growers in 4a and maybe 3b could get to fruit reliably. Haven't heard anything about it since then.
