I guess that's just when I usually plant my rye, I guess there's no reason to wait I've read for fall winter rye plantings to wait until September so the winter rye doesn't get too tall and tough. I'm going to do it in the next couple weeks because the winter rye is more of a cover crop for the clover and I'll hopefully be bear hunting the first weekends of September.

I was worried about that too, but I went for it July 1st last year anyway. I didn't want my barley to mature, so I broadcast my rye and AMS and then mow killed it. It never got wirey on me. It was the only November draw we had last year. That being said, never forget, the deer will eat anything up by us. We don't have the food surplus other areas have.

Keep in mind I also don't think we had a severe frost until about November 15th. I could be all wet on that, but that's how I remember it.

I have always planted my rye near august 15th and never had a problem with it getting to tall and tough, I ended up planting this field today as we are supposed to get some rain Thursday, oops better check, nope now Wednesday
