I just got off the horn with my LP company. I'm trying to get a date setup for later this month to have a service guy come out and run some 3/8" copper into the garage for my old clawfoot burner. Gonna make that my canning garage. This will also give me a second place to make stuff for deer camp. I need that burner for coffee and for boiling taters, and warming up soup. This way, I won't have to keep swapping out the griddle for the burner. I'll probably also split that line again once inside the building so I've got an outlet for a furnace too. But if I split it, then I've got to get the furnace. If I get the furnace, then I need to get another ceiling fan for out there. I also asked what the daily truck price was for propane. Up to $2.09 now. 1.89 from my place here. I’m scared how much it will be for our normal winter fill.

I've seen projections of $3+ per gallon for LP this winter. No idea if that's anywhere near accurate or not.
I do feel pretty good locking in 350 gallons at $1.70/gallon this week. I dug through some old records and found that we usually use less than 300 gallons from November through March/April. We should be good to go for the near term

Once during cheap season. Usually august. Then again once during the winter. 3 buck Lp scares me with my 1000 gallon tank

Dual fuel program here keeps our energy costs in check for the most part (so far, knock on wood)

Aside from my deer shack, I've never heated with propane. Since I'm closing in on building in the middle of nowhere South Dakota, I need to consider Propane. My plan is to have the ability to heat with LP and wood. We're also going to have a backup generator. Anyway, how big a tank should I get? My FIL has a 500LB tank and hardly uses any. He still heats 90% with wood.
I don't think I'll be as ambitious as him. The house will be modest, around 1,500 square feet. I'm pretty sure we could figure it out with a 500 gallon tank. But, knowing the world is going to shit and supply may fluctuate, I'm thinking about the 1,000 gallon tank. The larger tank might let us ride out price and supply issues.
Am I dumb to consider the larger tank when the 500 is probably plenty? Higher costs up front. But is it a better solution?

I'm leaning towards the big tank. It's the American way.

We have an electric boiler for in-floor heat, a heat pump for temps down to around 20, and an L.P. forced air furnace for when it gets cold. I have never figured out exactly how much LP we use in any given year, but I'm pretty sure we've never gone through more than 350 gallons. That's in an 1800 sq. ft. house with an unheated (currently) garage.

I'm leaning towards the big tank. It's the American way. Propane storage is always worth it. Ideally you’d get all your gas delivered in July, and not another fill until next July. If you’re gonna have a backup propane generator, I’d absolutely have a 1,000 gallon tank. I never considered being at my camp as much as I am now. If I knew this was coming, I’d have bought or leased a 500 gallon tank. I’d love to have two full seasons of gas. Right now, a person could have probably summer filled for $1.50 and not have to worry about the nonsense going on now. I’m gonna get stuck paying $2.50 or more by the time I’m ready for a fill. That $1/gallon is the lack of storage penalty. U don’t have to avoid that more than once or twice to pay for a larger tank.

Talked to a guy today at the LP Legion during the Viqueen game. He has a 1000 gallon tank (he owns it) and is down to 60% full. Most of his heat comes from wood, and a full 1000 gallons would likely get him through 2 full years. He's planning to top his tank off this week.
Edit...I should add that this guy's live in girlfriend (10 years or so) told me that they pulled all of their money out of the bank and have it in a few safes. They're convinced the end is near and that banks will fail....so take it for what it's worth.

Buy the big tank. My house has a 1000 gallon tank that was here when we moved in and my cabin has a 500 gallon tank. I started with a 250 on the cabin, but it always ran out when the prices were highest, so the 500 made more sense so I switched.

Flies all over the US problem solving as an independent contractor. Makes more in a year than I made in my best combined 5 years of employment. He and the girlfriend raise/grow most all of their food. Big greenhouse. Raise beef, pigs, and chickens for themselves and sell some for a few bucks. I struggle when talking with them about their world views. They're both intelligent and educated...and convinced the shit is gonna hit the fan sooner rather than later. If they're right, most of us are screwed
