Somebody tell me what to do in order to make my Burr Oaks produce better acorns. I got the trees.....but the acorn crop is not very good. I'd guess your light soil is at least one reason for their poor yield.

They should have great sunlight now. Not much for competition at this point.....but the regent may overtake them in time? May have to brush hog around some of them to allow more sunlight in a few years.....but right now they are king of the hill. As Stu said.....my light soil does not help. I may make a concerted effort to fertilize and lime these trees next year.

What my burrs look like.....released this tree a few years ago and after it's second year it produced well. I still have others, much larger that don;t produce well.

I've ready that some old trees just are barren and don't produce. I've got a huge white oak near my house that's leaves fall into my yard. I've never see it drop an acorn in the 25 years I've been here.

Could the reason some do not drop acorns is because they are to old?

I think oaks are like cats (I had another comparison ready to go, but I didn't).....they have general tendencies, but no set rules......some are more cooperative than others.
The bur oak I have that isn't real cooperative is a nice tree, but I wouldn't consider it "old" in terms of an oak. I have a white oak that only produces acorns on the lower 1/4 of the tree.....I can't explain that either.

Could the reason some do not drop acorns is because they are to old? Could be, but that would surprise me. Usually oaks continue to crank out more and more as they age. I had burr oaks on my old place that had to be 150-200 years old and they dropped shitloads of acorns regularly. Some oaks just aren't productive. I had a pin oak on the old place that never dropped an acorn. It must've been around 50 years old when I sold the place. The no acorn deal didn't bother me with that tree because it was a yard tree. I used to wonder if soil compaction from decades of mowing under that tree impacted it's ability to produce acorns. No idea...just a guess I had

I like to plant bur oaks by creeks or riparian areas. Right now we have two bur oaks producing acorns after 12-13 years. Nice trees, it is battle to get them to that age, best protected with tube/cage.

Well, I'll be dipped! I figured the trait of the tree would remain the same..... Is it because of a shorter growing season or something like that? I'll post up a pic when I get home of what I get here......when I get them. One good reason to pay attention to provenance of seed when growing trees. I got some of those huge burr oak acorns from Brushpile years ago. Started them in roottrappers, grew them out for a year and planted them on my old place. Last I knew they were still alive, but my guess is that they'll never produce acorns. I talked with a local nurseryman back then and he told me they'd likely survive but the nuts would probably never completely form. Substitute swamp white oak and a different southern supplier and I had the same experience. Knee high after 5-10 years and not worth the effort.

Time for a sandbur theory..... when at the edge of the natural range, or on marginal soils(like light or droughty for that particular species), seed production becomes limited and may only occur on occasional basis. You need ideal growing condition for seed production and then to germinate the next year.
Now more theories, a drought year or late frost might prime an oak (or apple) for a better year of seed production in the following year or two.
Ever hear of taking a wooden bat to an apple tree to make it produce the next year or two? Stress and then good growing conditions the next year might do it.

But....instead of hitting em with a bat.....why don't you shoot em?
