Brad, Are the oaks crowns getting plenty of sun? Will your logging help the oaks get more light? They appear to be the tallest oldest trees in the woods. There are some young ones too. I just think the soils are not good for white oak acorns. I'm sure the logging will not hurt them. Maybe will help? I think the planets are really going to have to align for you and I to get acorns. I think it's gotta be a dry year, and a favorable spring for flowering and pollination or however the hell oaks work. Mine got nailed with anthracnose (the too wet condition) again this year.

Agree 100%. But I do have a hunch that hybrid swamp oaks would thrive in our ground.

I looked up the swamp white plugs at Itasca, and they're claiming zone 3 tolerance. So I added 5 of them to my order. Interesting note... I asked first if they could get trees on my doorstep in SF by 9/14. Her answer was that it depends if the varieties are ready to be pulled. She's gotta check and get back to me tomorrow. Seems like a tight window if the stock isn't ready by 9/1. I'd think everyone would want to get them in the ground in time for them to grab hold and not heave out cause of the frost.

My whole order is: 150 ROD 45 white pine 20 chokecherry (for ND Peter) 5 swamp white 100 ROD and the pine would have gotten me over the line, but Peter wanted some trees too.

I think this is the hybrid that you guys are looking for $80 for 100 seedlings. It's a swamp white bur hybrid and is a fast producer. I believe that's the schuettes oak Geo used to rave about. Whip might have some input? www.kellytreefarm.com/hardwood.html#sbo

I'm going to order 100 myself and plant them in the brush tops from the thinning I'm going to do this winter on that south facing slope.

I noticed this Burr Oak growing in the yard near my pole shed at my deer land. I decided to watch it grow and just mowed around it. It's now about ten feet high and I first saw it in 2010. No acorns yet. I have lots of these little guys, and likely thousands of bigger burr oaks. They must put out acorns....but I never see any.

The swamp white oaks planted 3 years ago have acorns. Maybe 12 a piece but, that's a great start. They were maybe 1.5" and 8' when planted and are about the size of Foggy's bur. I'm grabbing those acorns this week. It was raining so I didn't take photos.
