This is a 6th leaf Whitney Crab from Burnt Ridge Nursery. The last three years, it has attempted to put out fruit. The last two, it abandoned them right away....this year, these four apples stuck around. About a month ago, all of the new growth on it started to die. This happened last year too. I'm thinking blight. You can see the apples stopped growing too. It's starting to take off a bit again. Always next year!

Not sure SC. Any photos of the whole tree? The leaves I see are green not spotted with any CAR or scab. Or yellow with any mineral or drought deficiencies.

I don't see any evidence of fire blight there. In the 2nd pic, there may be some scab, mineral deficiency or herbicide damage on some of the new growth. I can't really tell, but in the last pic it appears that the tree may be in a relatively shady setting? Is that a food plot or ag field in the back ground? My whitney does get a bit of CAR, but the fruit isn't impacted.

I'll grab some more pics the next time I'm down there. The only reason I was thinking blight was every tip of new growth, say 4-6 inches on the tree died at the same time. Idk, still learning!
Yes, this was my first round of tree planting and I stuck this one in a poor spot along a treeline. It doesn't get the greatest sun, but this spring I cleared a bunch of trees to the south of it. It sits on the edge of one of my plots and is about 40' from the corner of the neighbors bean field. Who knows, maybe I had some drift when. I sprayed my beans?

Drift is a real threat, especially if you or the neighbors aren't using an anti-drift additive of some sort.

I'm definitely not. I use a backpack sprayer, and when I'm near my trees I make sure I'm low on pressure and am close to the ground.

Last night only the first photo came thru for me. Looking at the other photos I'd say no to FB. If it was fire blight the tips of the tree would be curled over like a shepherd hook and turn brown. Maybe it is getting spray drift

It did that about two-three weeks ago and all of the dead stuff already fell off, so it isn't in this pic. Wish I woulda taken a pic at that time!

Well you want to clean up any dead stuff and get it burned if it's FB but, I've never seen it fall completely off? It usually hangs on.

Well that's FB. Sounds like your Whitney is resistant. Do you have other apple trees nearby this one?

I googled some photos and the tips of all the new growth looked like this Fireblight. Never seen it on a Whitney crab. Congrats?

Yaaaaay....dumb.
The is a chestnut crab about 20' away with no issues. All my other trees are 200' or so from this one. Wanted to create a little crab orchard at the end of one or my plots. Probably will be planting another two by these ones next spring and get clover around them so I don't have to worry about drift as much

I still have a bunch of dead sticks at the end of some of the branches. Should I be cutting those off and getting rid of them?
