Don't ignore local wild crabs for seedlings. I have some great deer crabs from seeds. The variation is good and it makes me wonder why I order scion from GRIN. Maybe??? I have things just as good here. Bird sized crabs on seedlings can be topworked

Thanks for the pics. I will try it if I can get caught up on other stuff. It will probably look a lot like what you are doing with the tubes and screen!

Here is one of those dolgo seedlings. I like the taste but my wife says it is too sour. I keep asking why I order crab apple scion from GRIN when I have trees like this.

I bought from them last year and they were very nice trees. I was happy with them. I got 100% survival out of mine, and some damn impressive growth year one. And I never watered any of them. Now, that being said, I haven't seen dry soil in six years.

Everything I've read and heard is they're a dependable dropper late season into winter. I was searching for that "November +" apple tree, and that's what I came up with.

My purchased dolgos that were grafted drop around Labor Day. This is true for both of my trees.
Dolgo seedlings are all over the place for apple drop and size.

Mine are still holding strong and it's 1.5 months after that. I'm sure it's a grafted tree (I would have to look to be positive, memories kind of run together sometimes). Got it from Wildlife group a couple of yrs ago and it's done really well. Two fruits have rotted on the stem so far this fall... I collected 1 seed out of each. No idea if they will be viable but I'm going to give them a shot. I'll collect as many as I can once the rest start to drop.

I've never seen a grafted Dolgo with fruit hanging much past mid-late September. Of course, I've never seen a grafted Dolgo in SC Kansas either.

Chance that I didn't get a Dolgo? Miss-labeled? Any way to find out for sure by looking at the tree? Maybe I should double check my records and make sure I have this one right...

Always a chance of mislabeled stock. I've got at least two here that weren't labeled correctly (may find more as more trees come into bearing age). Wildlife group also sells a few other crab varieties as I recall. It's worth asking around locally too. Maybe other folks with dolgos in your area get the same results.

Ha, I can count on my fingers and toes how many apple/crab trees I know about in my part of the state. If I found someone with a dolgo I would buy lottery tickets on my way home as it's my lucky day!
I checked my records and they show that I ordered and planted a dolgo in that spot (that's what I think I did anyway). I also checked the Wildlife Group's website and this is what it said about their doglo: "The fruit drops very slowly and will persist into December.". I guess it doesn't matter much as I can't do anything about it either way, and I still plan on saving seed to plant from it.
