I know apple trees can vary a lot when planted by seed, what about crabs? Do Dolgo's tend to stay somewhat true to the parents? I have a Dolgo that produced a handful of fruit this yr and am considering trying to start some seedlings.
I only have one Dolgo, the rest of my trees are different varieties. Will that matter or are they self fertilizing?
Worth the trouble?

The offspring may or may not closely resemble a Dolgo. Art has a bunch of Dolgo seedlings and the fruit (as well as the foliage and form of the trees) is quite variable. As far as if it's worth the trouble...I'd say "certainly" Just because the offspring won't be true Dolgo crabs doesn't automatically mean they'll be spitters.

I've read that Dolgo's tend to be true to seed also, but knowing how sexual reproduction works figured I should ask the guys with apple experience. I don't really care a whole lot about anything except disease resistance. I don't want to spend a lot of time and take up space for something that is going to be sickly.

DR will be an unknown with any seedling. If you have a bunch of seeds, plant them all...then when they germinate and grow, only keep the strongest/best growers. Art bought a bunch of Dolgo seedlings a couple years ago and I bought some from him for grafting. I have two seedlings that I planted out after the grafts failed. One is 8'+ tall with a good number of horizontal branches, the other is maybe up to my knee with zero side branches. I should probably just dig the little one up and toss it, but I'll let it be for at least a couple more years.

How hard is it to get the seeds to germinate? Any special process or care needed or can I just throw them in the ground, stake a tree tube over it, and walk away?

I put the seeds in a ziploc bag with a dampened (wrung completely out) paper towel. After a few months (maybe more, maybe less) they'll start germinating. Take them out and plant them. ........or, just stick them in the ground now and give them some protection from mice. Walk away and wait until spring

Sounds like a good idea, if anyone sees bundles of Dolgo crab I'd be interested in buying a block (20-25) I know some NRCS used to sell them.

A few years ago a group of us bought 100 dolgo rootstock. I might have got a flyer this year. From central Washington nursery. Nice roots on them

Thread on other forum . With Tapatalk I thought I was on this forum. I seeded some chestnut and frostbite seeds yesterday.

That small area was sprayed with roundup last summer. I should have sprayed a larger area as I found reed canary roots in that spot.

twenty five years ago I seeded some apple seeds and the mice ate up the seeds and rabbits hit the young seedlings. You need to protect them. Seeds are covered with about 1/4 inch of dirt.

I also seeded two spots in the garden.

As Stu said, there is lots of variation in seedlings, even dolgo seedlings, regardless of what is written.
