My grandson took “half a buck” early this morning. 200 lbs. must have broke one side off fighting. Woulda had a nice spread. Nice buck, congrats to your grandson. Did he shoot him on your land?

I talked to Tom today. He said he shot it on the neighbors property across the fence.

MN buck harvest down 15% opening weekend. Thats the only metric we have for herd size.
Ooops.

If that pace holds. 150k harvest or so. Excellent.
U know damn well the dnr would be squirming if it came in that low.

This is definitely the quietest deer season I've experienced here (or anywhere). Whether that's due to hunter restraint (doubtful), environmental factors, or fewer deer around...I can't say. I can say I sat for 4 hours this afternoon with a favorable wind watching part of an in woods brassica plot with loads of forage still available...and saw 0 deer.

In Mn i can tell you for fact after opening rifle day deer sightings for us have gone to zero until end of season more than once. That includes remainder of rifle, muzzy and some archery.

Hunter restraint along with individuals baiting is having a big impact on the harvest in my little world. West neighbor reportedly is holding 6-8 deer daily on his 15 acres. Oh the power of poured corn!

Baiting crossed my mind today. Other than a lack of deer, baiting is about the only thing I come up with. I've got lots of standing corn within 30 yards of the blind I sat in today...and nothing left the thickest cover around (my place) to get to that corn.

I have typed corn pile twice in the past 3 days as the reason for your woes. Deleted it both times. I highly suspect corn is fucking all of your hard work.

If it is, it's being done by some neighbors I wouldn't have expected to go that route. I fully expect my south neighbors to be baiting, and some folks further west probably are too....but I'm hunting the north end of my place during firearm season. Different groups of deer on those ends, so I'd have to guess for bait piles to be fucking up my hunt it would have to be my north neighbors doing it. Nothing shocks me anymore, but I'd be at least mildly surprised to find out they're that big of douchebags.
