An early warm spell isn't great for apple trees potentially, but it sure is good for the deer. They should be in great shape heading into spring.
I'm hoping the mild winter, wolf hunt and jump in bear tags might improve things on my rusk county Wisconsin place.

Southern MN is snow free. It’s just ditches and groves left. I’d be on the horn with my barley guy if I was down here.

We still have 6-8" in my fields and woods in SE MN, but southern exposure areas are almost clear. It all should be clear by next weekend.

Ran up to our hills place. Still a bunch of shitty crusty snow. Won’t be doing anything anytime soon. Can’t even get in the driveway. Probably 2’ in the driveway and 3-4’ by the road due to damn plows. Need some 60 degree days.

This looks really nice, but I hope my fruit trees don't break dormancy too early I have concerns, also. I still have some scion to gather. It is probably a good year to have a few trees on a north slope. Should we be shoveling snow around our trees?

Our snow pack is still at 27” which isn’t bad for this time of year. My concern is today is our first day of rain since we got snow. That is very unusual and my fear is the 27” is a killer for the deer to walk through. This rain will allow them to get up on top once it freezes. I have to get up for some scion but still no rush up there.

Having a 2 foot snowpack right now is like having a 2 foot stepladder under every tree to help with pruning. It ain't all bad.

It is probably a good year to have a few trees on a north slope. Should we be shoveling snow around our trees? I cut scion tonight from all the apple and pear trees from behind my house. Lots of snow here in my orchards, so my trees don't know spring is coming. This is the one time a slight northern slope is beneficial. The snow is mostly melted in the steep southern exposure in the road ditch by my house though.

It is probably a good year to have a few trees on a north slope. Should we be shoveling snow around our trees?I don't know, maybe? I did hear that there's about 4' of frost in the ground, so that should help a bit anyway. If the warmup lasts much more than a week or so, the fruit trees are likely in for a bare year.
